The Streets:

                                 A Photo Essay

I have a journalism degree.  I've spend the last several years working as a freelance journalist for anyone that would have me. I'm very concerned about many of the people we walk past on a daily basis.  Who are they? What are they doing? Why are they there? Some are briefly resting others may be there for a wide assortment of reasons. This isn't a judgemental photo essay. Just observations.

To me this is a metaphor for a society that trends to look the other way at societal issues. I don't know the stories behind most of these photos you'll have to draw your own conclusions.

Phoenix

I was across the street when I notice this couple who seemed to be in emotional distress.

Las Vegas

However, some are seeking assistance and their signs reflect their needs.  They aren't allowed to ask those walking by for fear of ejection.

Hollywood, California

Thousands of tourists are drawn to Hollywood to look at the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame as they walk past many who are far less fortunate.

Las Vegas, Nevada

A woman who had spend hours asking for money fell from her wheelchair as paramedics were called.

Las Vegas

Even though I have photos from several cities the ones from Las Vegas seem to stand out the most.

Las Vegas

Fremont street has and is undergoing  changes to attract people from the Strip. A light show is attracts hundreds every night as do many street vendors under the display.  Performers work for tips. Others hold signs asking for various degrees of assistance.

Tempe, Arizona

Tempe has pass an ordnance to keep people from sitting on the sidewalks.  Since this photo was taken, people have moved to the cities benches and frequently move to a new location near by.
